The City of Canal Winchester is one of the only cities throughout the great state of Ohio that resides between two counties, Franklin and Fairfield County. As of 2010, United States Census housed a little over 7,000 residents and stretches just shy of 8 square miles.

Canal Winchester was initially founded in 1828 by Ruben Dove and John Coleman when the Ohio & Erie Canal construction was set to run through Dove’s wheat field. According to legend Dove wanted to sue the state of Ohio; however, a worker on the Canal got Dove to change his mind by insisting that he would benefit from laying out a town in the designated area. This was because it is conveniently located between two of Ohio’s largest cities, Lancaster and Columbus. As a result, later that year, Dove and Coleman recorded the first plot of Winchester.

The City quickly flourished because of its easy access to transportation as well as the local agriculture. The rich soil of both Violet and Madison Townships provided the farmers with the right amount of nutrients to grow excess grain to be sold to other markets, which, in turn, created an economy based on agriculture. That, along with the Ohio Erie and Canal, brought in hundreds of passengers and cargo. Thus, allowing a way to transport the local grain to market. The first canal boat floated through Winchester in 1831. Then, in 1841 the village changed its name to Canal Winchester by establishing its first post office; however, several other locations in the state allegedly claimed the name, Winchester.

Today, the residents of Canal Winchester are famously known for hosting an annual Labor Day Festival on the first weekend of September and a Christmas In The Village weekend in December.
