DISCOVERING Blacklick, OHIO

The small unincorporated City of Blacklick was founded in 1852 and is a community located in the southern township of Jefferson, in Franklin County, encompassing the Columbus Metropolitan area. The city was initially named “Smithville,” named after its founder, William A. Smith. However, there was a different town with the same name; the city was renamed Blacklick. This is because of the nearby Creek with the same name, branching off of Big Walnut Creek.

Initially, a historian named W. Edson Richmond thought Blacklick was named after a local landowner, Henry George Black. However, Richmond researched the town’s history and discovered that H. G. Black was not born until 1817. In addition, a map from John F. Mainsfield’s Map of The State of Ohio, dating back to 1806, referenced the Blacklick Creek. Thus, leading to the conclusion that the city was named after the Creek.

Today, Blacklick is known for being established as a stop along the railroad line and the Blacklick Community Park. The park has a beautiful park for kids and a trial to walk or run, making it one of the most visited places throughout the small community.
